An Irish Wake for the 2007 Cleveland Cavaliers

Posted by wct6 on June 14, 2007

Tonight is likely to be the last Cavs game for a while.  But rather than lament the end of the 2006-07 season, and namely the ’07 playoff run, we are going to celebrate this team.

First of all, we are, admittedly, a little disappointed.  Yes the team overachieved this year, but expectations change.  I have heard a lot of people use that tired line of reasoning that “if we could go back to the beginning of the year and tell you that the Cavs would be in the Finals would you be happy?” to which the answer is obviously yes.  But consider this: if the Cavs got to the Finals and won the first three games by 20 points, and stood up 3-0 on the brink of a championship, then lost four games in a row and lost the series, could you then say “hey, you got to game seven of the Finals, you should be happy!”  Of course not, because your expectations changed.  Same with this year.  Once the Cavs got to the Finals, they weren’t just happy to be there, the were in the series to win.  So in that sense, we are disappointed.

But that disappointment aside, this was an exciting playoff run for the team, and a good stepping stone for the future.  We got to see them sweep someone out of the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.  We got to see them win the most exciting playoff game in recent memory, the double OT thriller in game five of the Pistons series.  And justice was served when they dispatched an overrated, overconfident, annoying Pistons team, and finally, if temporarily, shut up their annoying fans.  We also saw the emergence of Danny Gibson, who will be an asset to this team in the future.  And most importantly, all of the players and coaches got valuable playoff experience, which will help them down the road.

So when the horn sounds tonight, and the FUCKING Spurs begin celebrating their fourth championship, we will raise a glass to the 2006-07 Cavs, thank them for all that they have given us this spring, and look forward to the seeds that have been planted for the future
